Flags for Janie: Kilimanjaro Expedition

In 2018, David Mchone joined Radiating Hope on an inspiring climb to the summit of Mt. Kilimanjaro. He undertook this journey to honor his sister-in-law, Janie Lidey, who had recently been diagnosed with cancer.

David’s Story:

David’s climb was filled with emotional and physical challenges. He recalls, "Climbing Kilimanjaro with Radiating Hope was an unbelievable experience. We had a great group of 26 climbers, and although we were anxious about the weather, we were excited to see what we could achieve."

The first few days were challenging with elevation gains and tough weather conditions. However, David felt a strong sense of purpose. "My sister-in-law was diagnosed with stage four cancer. I carried her prayer flags to the summit in her honor," he shared.

The Climb:

David faced difficult terrain and high altitudes. He noted, "Everyone's starting to feel the altitude. They're getting headaches and feeling nauseous, but that's totally normal. Once we start to go down, everyone will feel better."

Despite these challenges, David's determination remained steadfast. "I realized the value of going slow and steady, and I could enjoy the journey more," he said.

Honoring His Sister-in-Law:

David’s primary motivation was his sister-in-law, Janie. "I've always wanted to climb Kilimanjaro, and taking her flags up in her honor was something I needed to do. This climb has been amazing, not just because of the personal goal but also because of the incredible people I've met who are saving lives in areas that lack proper cancer treatment."

At the summit, David proudly waved Janie’s flags and felt a profound sense of accomplishment. "You really can do anything if you have sheer determination. This climb taught me that," he reflected.
